Thanks for posting this and the link on your page. It is certainly grim reading of course yet in many ways we have sadly known and suspected as much for years.
Best wishes and good luck at collage and don't forget to have some fun.

I saw an amazing presentation by Ray Kurzweil at a conference a few weeks ago that your post reminds me of. Kurzweil is a futurist and one of the arguments that he makes is that these kinds of trends are always affected by the emergence of future technolgies. So, one response I would have to this kind of argument, is how will new (or future) technologies empower us to make better and more efficient use of those resources?

I definitely believe that we need to take a long, hard look at our use of natural resources and become more responsible in our usage.

That said, I think we should also expect technologies to improve so that our efficiences grow as well (at the same time, that we can probably also expect developing countries to be slower to adopt new, more efficient technologies--as the previous poster mentions).

Also, I have to say that as the mother of an 18 month old, 2050 doesn't seem very far away at all. Having children really changes your perspective on these issues. . .

Also, it depends on which resources you're looking at. I understand we have coal to last 150 years.

Interesting article, now if only people would take it seriously. I have a feeling that until the problem comes knocking on our door (about another 40 years) little will be done about this problem. In addition it is probably only going to be sped up by developing countries who do not have laws and regulations set up to control pollution. There is one globalization can be stopped...nobody is going to be around to continue it!

Starbucks had been debating about whether to invest in my home town in Germany or not.
When the first Starbucks cafes opened in the larger German cities people went crazy. It was a new, American thing and it just seemed like the thing to do. But I agree with you that price plays a major role. That's probably why the Starbucks craze has faded. Germans are going back to the (cozier) local cafes, unique places that serve drinks and foods that are made for the local customers rather than trying to fit the world's taste. And since our town isn't a very touristy area (despite the fact that Nicolas Cage bought a castle near it) there is not a big interest in
Starbucks anymore.

Well I beleieve this is happening because starbucks is well known and tourists don't wander around long enough to find the local cafes. If it were me, I would try to find some local cafes because i love trying new things. Now I can't really say much about the locals going to starbucks but i find it to be expensive so to me i would compare costs and probably go to the local cafe.

I followed your link to Flickr, and there was a discussion there about how Starbucks is spreading across Paris. The person who took the picture was upset that Starbucks was putting the local cafes out of business. My question here is why is that happening? Why do people go to a Starbucks over the local cafe? I'm wondering if the tourists are going to the Starbucks, or are the locals going as well?
