This looks like the Starbucks down the street from where I live. What makes the picture illustrative of globalization? (I’m just curious.)

This picture is reresenting globalization because it is a chain that has marketed itself to many places around the world. It has made its name synonomous with good service, good marketing, and wonderful peeople.

I followed your link to Flickr, and there was a discussion there about how Starbucks is spreading across Paris. The person who took the picture was upset that Starbucks was putting the local cafes out of business. My question here is why is that happening? Why do people go to a Starbucks over the local cafe? I’m wondering if the tourists are going to the Starbucks, or are the locals going as well?

Well I beleieve this is happening because starbucks is well known and tourists don’t wander around long enough to find the local cafes. If it were me, I would try to find some local cafes because i love trying new things. Now I can’t really say much about the locals going to starbucks but i find it to be expensive so to me i would compare costs and probably go to the local cafe.

Starbucks had been debating about whether to invest in my home town in Germany or not.
When the first Starbucks cafes opened in the larger German cities people went crazy. It was a new, American thing and it just seemed like the thing to do. But I agree with you that price plays a major role. That’s probably why the Starbucks craze has faded. Germans are going back to the (cozier) local cafes, unique places that serve drinks and foods that are made for the local customers rather than trying to fit the world’s taste. And since our town isn’t a very touristy area (despite the fact that Nicolas Cage bought a castle near it) there is not a big interest in
Starbucks anymore.
